Information security revolves around the three key principles: Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability (CIA). Depending upon the operational environment, context or use case, one of these principles might be more important than the other.
In the IT world Confidentiality is generally the highest priority, data would be encrypted preventing unauthorized access, signing to ensure Integrity and high availability measures in place for core systems only.
Operational Technology (OT) is different, Availability has the highest priority, followed by Integrity. Processes often need to run 24/7 and data validated and historized. Loss of control can lead to emergency stops, to protect life and environment, consequences have very different effects in OT that rarely register in the IT world.
Furthermore, not all OT protocols support data encryption and legacy systems often were never intended to be connected to business systems. Digitization is coming and these risks need to be addressed.
